Marketing: I’m on Tumblr (And So Can You!)

by Alison on July 3, 2012

It’s a holiday week, which means that Tuesday is the new Friday, so I’ll keep this post short. I have finally joined Tumblr and it’s my new favorite thing. Tumblr is funny because it was founded in 2007, back in the age of the dinosaur. It’s had a very slow build since then–instead of bursting into flames and burning itself out (like Friendster, MySpace, and Flickr).

And then suddenly this year it seems to have reached critical mass. Everyone I know is on Tumblr. Publishers buy so many books that started out as Tumblrs. I thought, Oh, I’ll just dip a toe in the water and see how it feels.

Then I threw myself in.

It’s enormous fun–and I’m treating it as a separate social media channel. This means that I’m currently posting different content on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram, this blog, and now Tumblr. So far it’s not too much to handle but we’ll see how everything shakes out.

And speaking of Instagram, I’ve decided to participate in BookRiot’s #dailybookpic photo challenge. If you love books and have a smartphone with a camera, you should too! My Instagram handle is: @apresley. Leave a comment with yours so I can follow you back.

Today’s prompt is: book browsing. Happy snapping!

I’ve actually been on Tumblr since 2007 and feel rather the opposite: It seems to have crashed and burned in the past year, compared to all the momentum it had in 2008 and 2009. But perhaps that’s just me speaking from a non-professional perspective, and that for marketing purposes, maybe it’s the opposite. I do know that most magazines I read still have Tumblrs. Maybe I should cancel mine and start a C&C Tumblr instead…but then that’s just another social media channel to keep up with. When will it all end?!?

Instagram, on the other hand, NEVER GETS OLD.
